Sudip Art

About

Sudip Chatterjee is a contemporary artist with International exposure, currently working from Kolkata, India. His work has been shown in New York, Berlin, London, and all over India. His last one-man show was in New York in June 2023. In a long career spanning almost three decades Sudip Chatterjee’s recent paintings and early paintings have remained rigorously abstract, his subsequent drawings were full of figural imagery with intermittent spells of non-figurative breaks. It shows his penchant for skill mixed with intellect. As the years passed, his paintings as well as his drawings became stark, bare, reclusive, and minimal.

For this painter who chose a career in art instead of medicine in which he secured admission, he engaged himself in his practice of painting in the strict discipline of a surgeon on a surgery table. The several layered applications paint him producing a certain tonality that reminds us of the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel and for us experiencing them which he absorbs and releases simultaneously the areas of divisions into a unitary whole sheer ecstasy before that came the visual was of an enticing mode. The other part of the oeuvre is in his extraordinarily sensitive modulation of tints and shades and subtle application of opaque white –his mixed media work done in oil and acrylic on canvas. Works that are personal and private, steeped in personal vision that is intimate and preoccupied with explorations of form, space, and myth. Chatterjee seems to strip away the layers to reveal the complex infrastructures of his work. He reinforces the sense of the evocation of the quiet.

Artist Statement

I was drawn towards art from childhood. Science was always my favourite subject. I used to look at the things around me and wonder, I contemplated on certain questions, the questions that relate to the very heart of our existence :  Why the Universe exists ? Is its genesis related to our consciousness? What is the meaning of life and it all ? The source of my artistic endevours is to convey my sence of overwhemilng wonder and the infinite beauty around me.

I have conceptualized life as a journey with its three inevitable phases-birth , sex and death. Though I had a privilege to study in Medical college,I did not enrol myself in the course. So it was perhaps natural for me that I liked to create texture on canvas and work on it as if it was an operation. Anything ,which excites me and  can even be the surface of the canvas, induce me to paint.

I usually enjoy the compositional challenges offered by space, with greater possibilities of individual expression. In pictorial term I believe that form and content are inseparable. They are not spelt out in forms rendered in graphic detail but condensed into a dominant image with resonance to evoke in my viewers involvement in my vision.
